A Letter From The Chair
Heidi J. Ellsworth, President, HJE Consulting Group & Current NWIR Chair
I cannot believe this is my last NWIR Letter from the Chair for my time as National Women in Roofing (NWIR) Chairperson. Wow, two plus years has gone so fast. What an exhilarating, astounding, empowering and life-enriching experience this has been for me. I have met the most amazing women and men and I have grown personally just by knowing each and every one of you. But it is the growth of NWIR that is so spectacular!
From a concept to a national organization, NWIR has exploded. This was a movement that was just waiting for a spark. It is not something that can be controlled; it is a passion for empowering women and transforming an industry that is in need of strong talent and labor. The timing was simply perfect.
We have talked about the four pillars; Mentoring, Networking, Education and Recruiting. This is what the organization stands for and there have been huge in roads in all of these areas. But it is how they come together that really makes the difference for women. We can bring women together through networking functions where they experience excellent mentoring and education (Don’t forget to attend NWIR Day). They leave jazzed and ready to grow their career and empower other women and, that becomes recruitment. It is not just one thing, it is the combination that has become so powerful and helped ignite the fire.
And within those pillars is an incredibly strong movement for community service and giving back. I am humbled by what I see the councils doing on local levels that are making a real difference and elevating the reputation of the roofing industry at the same time. Be sure to follow our councils on our website and social media to see how you can get involved and give back locally.
One of the underlaying core values of NWIR since the very beginning has been empowerment. It is simple, we need to empower each other. That means accepting our differences, celebrating our strengths and always being willing to take the higher road and reach out with a helping hand. That is not always easy. There are people who do not want to see women empowered in their jobs. To be honest they do not want to see women on the roof. But that kind of thinking although annoying needs to be in our rear-view mirror. Whether it is in the board room or on the roof, women have a place in this industry. If employers are not smart enough to treat their female employees right, then women have a whole industry of opportunity and the network to support them. Women are the solution the industry is looking for to grow the professional reputation of roofing and solve the problems of labor and talent shortages.
NWIR has gone viral, like we wanted it to do. Councils across the country are forming and making a difference. We have an amazing Board of Directors and Executive Committee Team that are working everyday to make this association sustainable and scalable. Membership will soon top 1000 women and men from all parts of the roofing industry who believe in NWIR. And in 2018, there will be new leadership. Shari Carlozzi, will move into the Chair role and will bring powerful purpose and leadership that I am very excited to experience.
I am so proud of all of the women who are leading efforts across the NWIR organization. And I am very proud that we can do it in a way that is not political but empowering. Simply, we are doing it our own way and making it a win for everyone involved. What a concept.
